It’s Always Perfect Paddling Conditions when there is a Shark Sighting!

Yup, it happened today.  I got out about 9 a.m.  and the conditions were perfect.  I paddled down to Cove Park and made my turn south and was so enjoying the perfectly glassy water with just enough bumps to make it fun.  Then when I was passing Kam II, a jet ski with a lifeguard came zooming over to me.  He told me there was a shark sighting and everyone had to get out of the water.  He said it was an eight foot tiger shark and I kept on paddling.  He came up behind me and said, so I am telling you about this and you are choosing to paddle?  I said yes.  So he said, well then if you fall off your board, I am not going to save you, you know.  I said, okay I heard you, and went on my way. Hmmm… that was not a nice interaction to have out paddling and it was starting to ruin my day.  When I arrived at the boat ramp, there was a man on a kayak there and I asked him if he had been approached by the life guard.  He told me, no, he had not heard about the shark.  Suddenly we were surrounded by about five turtles and I told the guy, well the turtles do not seem to be concerned about it.  Just as other turtles were starting to join us, the lifeguard at Kam III started yelling on his speaker that the beaches were closed.  I decided to just paddle back to Kam I and the water was so crystal clear I could see the bottom.  All of a sudden, a tiger shark passed by me!!!!!!  It was about ten to twelve feet from my board….. but it  only looked to be about six feet to me.  It was swimming about three feet under the water, but I saw the whole thing!  Well, the lifeguard wasn’t lying about a shark anyway!  It didn’t seem aggressive or anything, it was just passing me by.  I suddenly wanted to follow it, but knowing the lifeguards were watching me, I just paddled back.  When I got in, they had put up the “beach closed” signs and the “shark sighting” sign, so I grabbed my stuff and drove down to Keawakapu beach to swim.  When I got to the beach, the lifeguards had closed that beach!  I really wanted to get wet, so I went into the water.  It was so cool and clear I didn’t want to get out, but I didn’t want to get yelled at.  I drove back to Kam I and showered off and just about the time I sat down in my beach chair, they opened the beach back up!  So I went for my usual swim, the only person out in the water!  What a day…. frustrating and exciting…. all in one day!

hahaaaa. Mary, you crack me up….non compliant, huh? Oh! I would’ve LOVED to see the shark! Eli and I had a great paddle, saw some turtles looking for you! We are registered for the whale foundation sup event sunday. hope you join us!!!!!!!!!

    • well I wasn’t planning to fall off my board! And it was so perfect and the water so clear, even at Kam II. Oh the turtles were a’beggin’ me to stay and play…..geez, it sure was hard not to! Seeing the shark was, well, kinda cool. It wasn’t that big and it sure didn’t seem aggressive…. it just didn’t affect me. I just thought, oh, there it is, the lifeguard wasn’t kidding, but it didn’t shake me at all. I dunno, I guess I’m more concerned about crazy wind popping in out of nowhere and giving me a hard time! It was cute, though, Eli stayed around until I came in cuz she was concerned. It’s nice to have friends that care :):):):)

  2. OMG Mary you are a tough cookie. Not even a shark can scare you away from SUP. A true water woman at heart! You go girl!

    • Yup, it was one exciting (and frustrating day)…. and then the guy from the Maui News showed up and a tourist pounced on him to “tell her story”….uh, what story? I was sitting right behind them and cracking up because this tourist was wearing a bikini and wanted to get in his photo! Her story? Ummmm….I don’t think she was in the water with it, ha ha! Tourists are so funny. I just can’t wait to read “her story”……

  3. I saw her story in the Maui News, she was just sitting on beach, they should have interviewed YOU, you actually saw it up close!
