Choppy Sloppy

It was a beautiful sunrise and it rained last night.  The red flags were moved down the beach because there was a strong current pushing from the south.  The swell has definitely backed off but it was not a very friendly ocean out there today.  I decided to swim backstroke again since the water visibility is still messed up.  I hope the ocean settles down more in the next few days because I miss paddling!  It was still very nice swimming in 81 degree water though… Maybe tomorrow….

Swim Day!

The calm, mellow sunrise….. gave way to shore break by the time I was going to go paddling.  What a switch! The lifeguards posted the red flags just as I arrived at the beach.  The tide was very high too so that might have been contributing to the surge onto shore.  The water visibility was worse than yesterday with all the shorebreak.  I ended up just swimming backstroke.  The water temperature is still 81 degrees!  It always feels good to get in the water…. hopefully conditions will calm down tomorrow….

Windy!!!

The morning sunrise was just beautiful!  By 8:30 a.m. the wind came up though.  By 9 a.m. it was fully blown out with white caps and substantial wind waves!  No paddling today!  In fact….. with the cloud cover I almost just went home.  Most people were fleeing the beach but that actually just made it pretty peaceful.  I stuck around.  Then the sun started to peek out and I went for a wild swim!  The visibility was non existent and the wind waves relentless.  It was a lot of work swimming against the wind!  I persevered and made it almost to the end of Charley Young beach and then turned around.  It was a wild ride back!  I was like a rag doll being tossed around!  I got back quick!  The sand was blowing around too so that was my final reason to go home.  Maybe tomorrow……

Swim Day!

It was a beautiful sunrise! The sun coming up over Haleakala was so pretty and the pink clouds painted the ocean in pastels!  The beach was really nice ….until I was ready to go out paddling.  The wind came up and the water got choppy!  I decided to wait for awhile to see if it would calm down.  It just wasn’t going to be a calm morning…..that ended about 8:00 a.m. today!  Oh well, it was still a nice day so I went for a swim.  At least the water visibility is improving and no shore break.  Maybe tomorrow….

Paddling Day!!

It was a beautiful serene sunrise…. all in pastels.  As the day went on…… It first looked like the wind was going to come in early.  Then it suddenly got really nice even though I could see white caps looming in the distance.  I paddled south in some bumpy, yet glassy swells and they were pushing from the north.  By the time I got down to the end of Kam 2….. the conditions got very funky.  I didn’t trust the wind!  I turned around and headed north.  Then the wind backed off again and the ocean calmed down.  I paddled down to Charley Young beach and once again the conditions got funky!  The wind just couldn’t decide what it wanted to do this morning.  After I came in the wind picked up a bit stronger and putting my board up on my car got interesting!  I made it though.  I swam in a nice lull of conditions and the water was so nice and warm….about 81 degrees!  The water visibility was the best it had been in a week.  I hope tomorrow morning is calm!

Turtle Day!!

Yes ……yes it was a gorgeous day!  Calm conditions and glassy water for paddling!!  I headed down to the boat ramp.  When I arrived, there were two tourists snorkeling.  The man kept diving down to harass the turtles!  Luckily that didn’t stop the turtles ftom coming up.  Three turtles surfaced right away and one of them was Bumpy for sure!  She posed as usual and came right to me.  I think she likes it when I talk to her.  Two more turtles popped up and that was five turtles for the boat ramp.  I paddled back in nice conditions ( no wind yet!) and cruised by the rocks between Kam 1 & 2.  I spotted a turtle closer in but so did the snorkelers.  Then a turtle  appeared under my board and was swimming north so I followed it.  I cruised with it past the lifeguard tower and through a group of excited tourists.  Then I paddled back and came in.  That made seven turtles in all for today!  My swim was nice too and the water clarity is improving finally.  What a great day!

Paddling Day!!

It was a very nice morning and paddling was on my agenda!  There was a comfortable breeze blowing from the south and east…… just enough to keep me cool.  I paddled down to the end of Kam 2 and could see that Kam 3 had red flags posted.  It was wavy and a little bit of swell breaking shallow….. But not too bad.  Hardly anyone was out paddling so I was really peaceful  in my solitude.  I turned around at the end of Kam 2 and paddled north.  It was still wavy and I think it was being generated by trade winds way out.  I headed past Kam 1 but the surface of the ocean got kicked up and it seemed like the wind might be changing direction.  I decided to go in and get my swim in.  The water visibility is still poor due to the wind swell activity but at least I got my swim in!  Lately it has been getting kind of funky around 10:00 and 11:00….. with clouds moving in.  There was even a flood watch for the west shore last night.  I hope the weather smooths out soon because I really miss my turtles!
